On a day when the most arresting headline to be found in Scotland was, “I am 12 and pregnant, but I would have never smoked dope if I hadn’t been drunk”, announcing that members of a Masonic Lodge had completed a 65-mile bike ride from Erskine to Edinburgh is always going to seem just a little tame. But on 14 May 2006 the brethren of Lodge Stirling Royal Arch successfully completed just such a venture. Not that it was easy. A few took the wrong turning and ended up in Partick. Some had to contend with angry swans and anti-social delinquents near Polmont and most of us had to deal with broken gears and temperamental saddles at some point on the journey. By Linlithgow we had enough and we were vowing never to do anything quite so foolhardy again. We were tired, cold and all complained of various aching limbs and ragged and extremely sore backsides. Yet, oddly enough, by the time we had had a couple of pints, we were making plans for a similar adventure next year. As a result of our efforts and the kindness and generosity of many people, it looks like we have raised a considerable amount of money for research into ME. I would like to take this chance to thank everyone who supported us and most particularly my brothers at my mother lodge for their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved.
